Tech-savvy modern girls prefer getting video games to dolls as presents

If you are looking for a present for a modern girl then forget traditional dolls…and head to the computer store instead if you really want to make them happy.

For the first time in half a century dolls are no longer the favorite toy of choice for girls because computer games are now in the top slot.

Boys, meanwhile, are turning their backs on the once highly sought-after construction kits and they now favor modern gadgets such as iPods, Playstations and consoles.

In fact tech-related presents have overtaken the likes of Lego, Meccanno, Barbie and Cabbage Patch Dolls which were the mainstay of British childhoods from the 1950s to late 1990s.

The study by energy firm E.ON found that overall electronic toys jumped from fifth most popular play thing in the 1980s to the toy of choice for the 21st century kid. Construction toys still cling to second spot, with 18 per cent of children naming them as their favourite while dolls take third place, with a 16 per cent score.

According to the survey the biggest decline has been in traditional board games -  having been the number one toy for 12 per of those born in the 1950s to just three per cent for those born in the 1990s.
