British readers are now buying more downloadable e-books than both hardbacks and paperbacks combined as the electronic versions gain in popularity.
Online retailer Amazon reports that British readers bought 114 e-books for every 100 paper-and-ink books sold via its store so far this year.
Many of this year’s hits have been by self-published authors and priced from just 99p. Three out of the top ten best-selling writers on Amazon’s Kindle store fall into that category.
And over the past year, there has been a four-fold increase in the number of authors and publishers in the UK self-publishing via Kindle.
On Kindle Direct Publishing, any Amazon user can upload a book as a Microsoft Word document, set a price, then choose a cover image.
The process requires only two forms to be filled in.
Kindle’s most successful author is E. L. James with more than two million copies of her erotic novel Fifty Shades Of Grey having been sold through Kindle alone.
